Netflixcontinues to be a popular streaming platform for action movie fans, with their latestJohn Wick-esque revenge thriller now finding success and crashing into the top 10. Following the likes of such genre hits asRebel Ridge, Carry-On, The Shadow Strays, and more, the streamer’s new action offering, the brutal and bloodyDemon City, is gradually finding an audience since being released at the end of last month.
An adaptation of the manga “Oni Goroshi” by Masamichi Kawabe,Demon Citymergesviolent revenge actionwith the supernatural in this tale of a highly skilled hitman who resurrects his deadly skills and cuts a bloody path of vengeance after his wife and daughter are (seemingly) killed. While it does sound a lot like a thousand revenge stories before it, sometimes, a no-nonsense action thriller about a former assassin on the warpath is exactly what you need. Clearly, audiences agree.

WhileDemon Cityhas not yet accrued enough reviews for a Rotten Tomatoes rating, the reactions that have emergedtease a brutal revenge thriller that doesn’t waste time with things like characterization or substance. You know, things that sometimes get in the way of bloodshed. Pramit Chatterjee of Digital Mafia Talkies awardedDemon Citya near-perfect score of 4/5, saying, “WhatDemon Citylacks in terms of emotional depth or narrative complexity, it more than makes up for with its balls-to-the-walls, no-holds-barred, fabulously gory, and insanely entertaining action sequences.” Similarly, LaNeysha Campbell of But Why Tho? A Geek Community added, “Demon Cityis a dark action adventure full of intense fight scenes. If you want an entertaining, straight-to-the-point bloody action film, Demon City is right up your alley. The film is a solid entry point to explore more of Hiroaki Samura’s work.”
Lastly, Johnny Loftus of Decider knows the deal withDemon City, saying, “It’s the fighting and bloodshed that’s the draw here, as in a one-versus-many staircase battle that at one point includes Sakata utilizing one of his adversaries as a murderous rappelling device. Throw in a few slight plot twists, and a few more references to the fanatical, slightly mystical nature of the masked Kimen-gumi, and you’ve got a satisfyingly single-minded revenge movie that doesn’t waste time jawing about it.”
