This feature is still very much a ghost story. However, it is atypical. So, whatever assumptions one might have for a family discovering their home is haunted, fling it out of the window. This household is “slightly dysfunctional” and unorthodox, which is a fair characterization. Developing an immediate exit strategy is the dominant mission for most families whodiscover spiritual manifestationsin their homes. But not this family. They take advantage of the opportunity. Enthralled by the encounter, young Kevin films the apparition, which is a little vexing for Ernest. But dad has the notion of putting it all on the web, turning this otherwise otherworldly encounter into the classic bait-and-switch situation. Frank and his entire family profit from his genius idea. The footage takes them viral, catapulting them to stardom. They have become the latest internet phenomenon. Everything seems to work smoothly for the family. Of course, that is until it doesn’t. The average viewers are not the only ones watching. The CIA also takes an interest, and they want Ernest. However, Kevin grows considerably fond of his new ghostly charge, who is also mute. Regardless, Kevin’s objective is to provide Ernest protection while helping to resolve the enigma surrounding his death. But this mission is edgy and high stakes, rapidly accelerating into an adrenaline-pumping adventure.

We Have a Ghosthas an impressive cast poised to offer the utmost in entertainment. David Harbour (Stranger Things, Violent Night)plays the central character, a phantom named Ernest, who haunts an abode soon occupied by a family of four. Marvel star Anthony Mackie will assume the role of Frank, the patriarch. And Jahi Winston will portray Frank’s son Kevin.Army of the Dead’sTig Notaro will step into the role of a government agent in pursuit of Ernest. And Jennifer Coolidge ofWhite Lotuswill become a Medium that fulfills her practice on television. The additional cast includes Faith Ford, Niles Fitch, and Steve Coulter.

The film is rooted in Geoff Manaugh’s short storyErnest. According toDread Central, Vice published Manaugh’s work in 2017, and it became a choice pick. Dread Central noted that several studios angled for the rights; however, Legendary won them. The platform extolled the brilliance of the short story, noting its creative and intriguing plot.

Christopher Landon is the director and is also credited for writing the screenplay. Despite what many know of Landon’s work, he promisesWe Have a Ghostis distinctly different. WhileFreakyandHappy Death Day 2fall squarely into the same horror-comedy and thriller genre,We Have a Ghostwill not. According toEW,in this film, Landon stays in the supernatural zone deploying a style that is more suitable to all ages. Also, David Harbour was Landon’s first choice. However, Harbour was skeptical about the role.
“We met, and he told me he was terrified of doing the role, which I thought was great because it shows he was feeling vulnerable, intrigued, and excited.”
Eventually, both agreed, and he got his Ernest and fans their unique story.
