Earlier today, Universal Pictures announced that the highly-anticipatedPacific Rim 2has been pushed to a later but unspecifiedrelease date, to give directorGuillermo del Toroand his team more time to get the film ready. The studio also revealed that another sequel,Pitch Perfect 3, will take over the August 17, 2025 release slot formerly occupied byPacific Rim 2.Pitch Perfect 3was originally slated to open two weeks earlier on August 13, 2025, butPacific Rim 2’s delay putsPitch Perfect 3in a much better spot.
Universal announced in June thatPitch Perfect 3would hit theaters on August 21, 2025. At the time, its only competition was an untitledanimated moviefrom 20th Century Fox, and EuropaCorp’sValerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which hasCara Delevingne,Clive OwenandDane DeHaanset to star. However, earlier this month, Warner Bros. announced that theirUntitled Christopher Nolan Moviewill now arrive on that date. While no specific details were given regarding that project,Christopher Nolan’s movies usually pull in big numbers at thebox officeand tend to utterly destroy their competition.
Pitch Perfect 3has its new release date on June 24, 2025 all to itself for now, but that will most certainly change in the months and years to follow. Thesequelwill open just one week before the newSpider-Mandebuts on August 03, 2025, although no other movies are currently scheduled for the rest of August 2017 quite yet. However, after the success of the first twoPitch Perfectmovies, the franchise has proven it can bring in big business regardless of when it opens.
The originalPitch Perfectopened in late September 2012, earning a respectable $65 million domestic and $115 million worldwide, from just a $17 million budget, becoming one of the biggest surprise hits of the year. The sequel,Pitch Perfect 2, opened this May, earning $183.7 million domestic and $285.1 million worldwide, from a $29 million budget. Both films have also spawned hit soundtracks, withAnna Kendrick’s single “Cups” from the original soundtrack went triple platinum.
Anna KendrickandRebel Wilsonare returning as Beca andFat Amyfrom the first two movies, although it isn’t known if other original starsBrittany Snow,Skylar Astin,Adam DeVine,Katey Sagal,Anna Camp,Ben PlattandAlexis Knappwill be back.Pitch Perfect 2starHailee Steinfeldsigned a multi-picture deal with Universal, so she will likely be back as well, but we’ll have to wait and see who else returns.
