It’s Midnight Margarita time becauseNicole Kidmanis already casting spells from the set ofPractical Magic 2. The Academy Award-winner (Best Actress in a Leading Role,The Hours) has officially reunited with herPractical Magic(1998) costarSandra Bullock— who is an Oscar winner in her own right (Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role,The Blind Side) — as production begins on the 2026 sequel. Kidman took to social media and shared a first-look video (below) of the two Hollywood A-listers hugging it out in the never-before-seen footage from the film. Kidman wrote via her Instagram post (below):
“The witches are back ✨ Owens sisters’ first day on set! #PracticalMagic”

Kidman reprises her role as the enchanting Gillian Owens, who is the sister of Bullock’s character, Sally Owens. Both actresses were reported to be in talks to return for the magical sequel over a year ago in the summer of 2024, and it was Kidman who revealed that “Sandy will be in it” only days after the news started circulating about the possibility of aPractical Magicfollow-up almost 30 years after the original debuted in 1998. Director Griffin Dunne’s tale of the Owens sisters was lambasted by the critics, which resulted in the film registering a dismal 26% on the Tomatometer against 102 reviews posted to Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Practical Magic’ Sequel Won’t Conjure Up Return of One OG Cast Member
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman might be back, but a key Owens actress won’t be making any magic in the highly anticipated follow-up.
However, the fans were much more practical — pun most definitely intended. Discerning audiences gavePractical Magicplenty of praise on Rotten Tomatoes, which led to the movie registering 73% on the Popcornmeter against 100,000+ ratings. As a result, the Owens sisters' first big-screen misadventure has become a cult classic, and with both Kidman and Bullock back, Warner Bros. made it official thatPractical Magic 2was brewing up a September 2026 release.

Who Will & Won’t Be Returning for ‘Practical Magic’ Sequel?
Practical Magicenthusiasts can officially mix up their own Midnight Margaritas because both OG actresses Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will be joined in the 2026 sequel by none other than the original film’s Aunties Jet and Franny, whowill again be portrayed by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channingrespectively. Wiest adds even more Oscar-winning star power toPractical Magic 2thanks to the golden statues she earned working on Woody Allen’s filmsBullets Over BroadwayandHannah and Her Sisters. Meanwhile,Grease(1978) lovers will be delighted to know that the fan-favorite Rizzo actress, Channing, is also back for more magic.
Unfortunately,Evan Rachel Wood will not be returning forPractical Magic 2.Wood played Sally Owens’ (Bullock) older daughter, Kylie, in the originalPractical Magic, while her younger sibling, Antonia, was portrayed by Alexandra Artrip. Wood revealed the news on her Instagram account, in which she wrote:

“I am getting asked about this a lot, so l’ll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel. l offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are re-casting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
Practical Magic 2opens in theaters on Sept. 18, 2026.Susanne Bier will direct the sequel, which is being written by Akiva Goldsman, who served as one of the co-screenwriters on the 1998 cult classic. The follow-up’s cast also includes a wealth of newcomers, including Joey King, Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Lee Pace, and Solly McLeod. It’s far too early to even begin trying to predict howPractical Magic 2will perform at the box office, but, hopefully, it will fare far better than the $68.3 million it made worldwide against its hefty $75 million production budget.
