It’s time for the return of Punky Power!Punky Brewster 2is officially happening with original star Soleil Moon Frye set to return as the rambunctious orphan who is now all grown up. This is the latest classic sitcom that is getting the revival treatment, yet this will be a slightly more adult version of the family friendly hit from the 80s.
UCP is developing thePunky Brewstersequel, which originally debuted on NBC all the way back in 1984. Punky became a pop culture icon when she first arrived, and she even got her own animated series. The original incarnation was a multi-camera show created by David W. Duclon. It followed an orphan girl being raised by her foster dad played byPolice Academystar George Gaynes, who has since passed away.
This hybrid reboot will also be multi-camera, with Punky now asingle mother of threewho is trying desperately to get her own life back on track. She will meet another young orphaned girl who reminds her an awful lot of her former self.
Steve and Jim Armogida will write and executive produce thisPunky Brewstercontinuation. They are best known for their work on the TV adaptation ofSchool of RockandGrounded for Life. Soleil Moon Frye will also be an executive producer on the series, working alongside David W. Duclon who is returning and Jimmy Fox of Main Event Media.
Punky Brewsteronly lasted for four seasons, only two of which ran on NBC. The final two seasons were produced for syndication. The show was nominated for three PrimeTime Emmy awards including two forOutstanding Children’s Program. Soleil Moon Frye also lent her voice to the Saturday morning incarnation of the franchise, which was called It’s Punky Brewster, and ran for two seasons. It also eared a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program.
ThePunky Brewsterrevival will be UCP’s first-evermulti-camera sitcomas well as their first family oriented sitcom. Punky joins the ranks ofBoy Meets World,Full House,RoseanneandWill & Grace, as popular shows from the 80s and 90s that have been brought back with the original players in tow.
Soleil Moon Frye continued acting afterPunky Brewsterwent off the air, appearing inFriends,Saved by the BellandThe Wonder Years. She had a recurring role onSabrina the Teenage Witch. And given her time spent voicing thePunky Brewstercartoon, she was able to parlay that into a career as voice over actress, appearing on such shows asRen & Stimpy,The Proud Family,Robot ChickenandBratz. She has also hosted the Emmy-winning Daytime seriesHome Made Simplefor Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network. She has also contributed to theTodayshow. Outside of acting, she has also penned to books,Happy ChaosandLet’s Get This Party Started.
