Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Citystar Hannah John-Kamen has confirmed with some zeal that the live-action adaptation of the sword and sorcery comic book,Red Sonja, is still going ahead. While not much has yet been revealed about the project, John-Kamen replied with an eager “Yes!” and a laugh when asked whether she was still on board to bring the superheroine warrior to life.
Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith forMarvelComics in 1973 and partially based on Robert E. Howard’s character Red Sonya of Rogatino, Red Sonja is a female swashbuckler who first appeared in Marvel’sConan the Barbarian. As is so often the case, the character suffers a tragic backstory when a group of mercenaries kills her family and burns down their house. While Sonja makes an attempt to defend herself, she cannot lift her brother’s sword and is tortured by the invading group. Her cry for revenge is soon answered by the red goddess Scáthach who imbues her with incredible strength and fighting skills.

ARed Sonjareboot has been on the cards for quite some time and finally gained traction earlier this year, bringing in director Joel Soloway who will work from a screenplay they have co-writtenalongside the writer and showrunner behind Netflix’s plannedTomb Raiderseries, Tasha Huo. “I can really have so much fun with Red Sonja,” Soloway said of the adaptation. “I see her a little bit more like the first kind of bad girl superhero. Sort of like the Batman of The Dark Knight or Deadpool, you know? The world is changing so much right now for superheroes, that I just really look forward to not only going to the edge of what I’ve ever written and directed before, but to the edge of the genre as well.”
Soloway has alsopraised the casting of Hannah John-Kamenas the titular Marvel Comics character, describing her as “a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja. Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.” While shopping the movie around at the European Film Market earlier this year, Soloway explained why now is the perfect time for Red Sonja to light up the screen. “There could not be a greater moment in our world for Red Sonja’s ways of wielding power and her connection with nature and our planet…. [she’s] an ancient heroine with an epic calling,” Soloway declared.
Red Sonjahas not yet been given a release date but is expected to begin filming in 2022. Hannah John-Kamen meanwhile can currently be seen in a different adaptation-slash-reboot, that ofResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which reboots the popular video game franchise.
