The CW has shifted one of its actor over toRiverdale. It’s been confirmed that Sam Witwer will join the cast of the Archie Comic’s inspired show in its fourth season as Mr. Chipping. During Comic-Con, Cole Sprouse explained that Jughead will be shipped off to a prep school, or in the actor’s words, to a place of “the bane of [Jughead’s] existence.” Sprouse had this to say about the subplot.

“Jugheadgets whisked away on a scholarship to a very sort of Gossip Girl Upper East Side preppy, pretentious, richy-rich silver spoon [school] and he’s going to be the new blood…But yeah, I think it’s fun. And the school also kind of serves – I assume, maybe I’m just speaking out of turn here – but it serves as the setting for the flash-forward.”

It seemsSam Witwerwill be one of the prestigious school’s lecturers, a recurring character known as Mr. Chipping. The news was confirmed with the following official character description:

“Handsome, bookish and cool, Mr. Chipping teaches creative writing at a prestigious prep school near Riverdale. He recruits Jughead for his seminar, and while he’s eminently inspiring to his students, there’s a darkness hidden far beneath the surface…”

Most fans recognize Witwer from his role asAgent Liberty on The CW’s Supergirl, but he has been around comic book and genre world for quite a while. After a series of guest and voice roles, Witwer portrayed the Triton refugee, Crashdown, in the reimaginedBattlestar Galactica. He made a name for himself on the small screen as Davis Bloome onSmallville. This eventually led to the starring role in the US version ofBeing Humanwhere played the vampire with a conscience, Aiden Waite, for its entire 4 season run. He continues to provide his voice to multipleStar Warsvideo games as Palpatine as well as Maul/Darth Maul in the seriesStar Wars: RebelsandStar Wars: The Clone Warsand filmSolo: A Star Wars Story.

There is no word yet about Witwer’s importance to the overall plot ofRiverdale, but Sprouse’s claim at a flash-forward hints at a new mystery. Season 4 will see our characters' high school years coming to an end, but after a season of serial killers, suicides, secret societies, cults, organ stealing, underground boxing matches and relationship drama, we aren’t expecting anything calm or normal from Mr. Chipping.
