After taking the helm ofThe Equalizerand this year’s highly-anticipatedThe Magnificent Seven, filmmakerAntoine Fuquahas come aboard to direct yet another high-profile remake. The filmmaker has entered talks with Universal Pictures to direct their new version ofScarface. FilmmakerPablo Larrainhad been attached to direct back in 2014, but he is no longer involved.

Deadlinereports thatAntoine Fuquais in negotiations to direct this project, which would mark the third different incarnation of this story. The originalScarfacehit theaters in 1932, starringPaul Munias Chicago gangster Tony Camonte.Al Pacinostarred asTony Montanain the iconic 1983 remake, which shifted the story to Miami. This new version will be set in modern-day Los Angeles.

The last update we had on this project was back in March 2015, whenStraight Outta ComptonwriterJonathan Hermancame aboard to write thescreenplay.Paul AttanasioandSuicide Squadwriter-directorDavid Ayerhad written earlier drafts of the script, but it isn’t known if this latest script incorporates anything from the previous drafts.David Yates(The Legend of Tarzan,Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) was also attached to direct at one point in 2013.

Marc Shmuger,Scott StuberandDylan Clarkwill produce alongsideMarty Bregman, who produced the 1983Scarface reboot. No production schedule has been given, and it isn’t known when production may begin, or if Universal is targeting a release date yet or not.Antoine Fuquamost recently directed last year’s boxing dramaSouthpaw, and hisMagnificent Sevenremake hits theaters on September 23. He directed the classic cop dramaTraining Dayback in 2001, which won Denzel Wasington an Oscar for Best Actor.

The iconic 1983Scarfacemade $44.6 million during its domestic run in 1983, which would be the equivalent of a $118.1 million release today. The movie went on to become a cultural sensation in the years that followed, with the classic returning to the big screen back in 2011, to celebrate the movie’s debut on Blu-ray.
