Best known for playing Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier in the MCU, Stan has been on the promotion trail a lot at the beginning of 2022 for some of his non-Marvel projects that are out now or coming soon.
While doing interviews to discuss the Hulu seriesPam & Tommy, in which he plays Motley Crew drummer Tommy Lee, romantic thrillerFreshand the spy movieThe 355, the subject of the many fan-edits that have compared him toStar Warslegend Hamill came up. Over the years, Stan’s face has been Deepfaked into footage from the originalStar Warstrilogy, and in real life, the two actors have become friends and stay in touch often, generally referring to themselves as “father and son” in media posts and interviews.
AlthoughLuke Skywalker made an unexpected appearance inThe Mandalorian, with Hamill returning to play the character once again with the help of de-aging technology, there are currently no plans for Skywalker to have any kind of significant role in the future of the franchise. For many,The Rise of Skywalkerwas the final movie in theSkywalker Saga,and that was the end of the story. Of course, in Hollywood, it is very much a case of never say never, so there is always a chance that the opportunity to play Luke would come up for Stan. The question came up again in Stan’s interview withEsquire, and he was happy to play along with the idea. He said:
“Look, it’s really kind. Never say never. Mark Hamill is my father, you know, and he knows that, and I call him every Christmas to tell him, ‘Just want you to know I’m around.’ It’s really terrifying.”
Could Anyone Other Than Mark Hamill Play Luke Skywalker In Future Star Wars Projects?
Certain characters are so synonymous with an actor that it is unthinkable for any diehard fan even to consider the prospect of anyone else playing them. Along with the likes of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Robert Englund’s Freddy Kruger, Mark Hamill’s career-defining role as Luke Skywalker will likely never be successfully taken over by anyone else. Where many movies from the 70s and 80s have either been remade or are in consideration, the continuation of theStar Warsfranchise has almost guaranteed that the originalStar Warswill be one of the few that are almost immune to being given a remake.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that there could be other Luke Skywalker stories told as theStar Warsuniverse continues to expand. We have already seen Alden Ehrenreich take on the role of a younger Han Solo inSolo: A Star Wars Story. With a timeline gap betweenReturn of the JediandThe Force Awakens, there is always the possibility for more tales from the Skywalker story if Disney chooses to dip into that pot. As Stan himself says, never say never.
