2016 is shaping up to be a banner year forvideo game movies, with the highly-anticipated releases ofWarcraftandAssassin’s Creed, and a newTomb Raideralso in the works, starring Oscar winnerAlicia Vikander. Today we have word that another iconic video game is heading to the big screen, Sega’sShinobi. ProducerMarc Plattis developing the adaptation with Stories International Inc., the production arm of the Sega Group.
According toVariety,Marc Plattwill produce this adaptation with hisMarc PlattProductions partnerAdam Siegel, along with Stories International President and CEOTomoya Suzuki. The originalSega video gamewas launched in 1987, which spawned a number of sequels such asShadow WarriorandThe Revenge of Shinobi. The original game centered on a character named Joe Musashi, who became a skilledninjawith the Oboro clan, as he fought off an evil ninja syndicate known as Zeed. Here’s what producerMarc Platthad to say in a statement about this video game adaptation.
“We love the Shinobi games and believe that the world of ninjas has never been properly explored onscreen. We now have the opportunity to do just that. With Shinobi, we hope to make a film that honors the essence of the games and brings thisfascinating worldto life for moviegoing audiences.”
The project doesn’t have a director or screenwriter attached at this time, butShinobiwill be just the latest Sega project to be put into development. We reported in 2014 that Sega wasstarting to developa number of its iconic games for movies and television through Stories International Inc., includingAltered Beast,Streets of Rage,Rise of NightmaresandCrazy Taxi.Shinobiwas also mentioned in that initial report, and it seems this will be the first project to move forward. Marc Plattmost recently producedBridge of Spies, which was nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars. He is also producing three movies that are set for release later this year,The Girl on the Train(Jun 06, 2025),Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk(July 05, 2025) andLa La Land(August 13, 2025). Also on his upcoming slate is the long-anticipate adaptation of the hit Broadway playWickedand the sequelWanted 2.
