Writer and producerSteven Moffathas not quite given up on more episodes ofSherlockmaterializing in the future, declaring that he would “start writing tomorrow” should stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman ever decide to return. Speaking withDeadline, Moffat revealed that he would love nothing more than to return to the world of Sherlock Holmes following the episodeThe Final Problem, which aired back in January 2017.

“They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, ‘please come back?’” Moffat joked while discussing a possibleSherlockcomeback.

Sherlock and Watson in a restaurant area

Beginning back in 2010, and based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconicSherlock Holmesdetective stories,Sherlocktransports the famous sleuth to the modern-day.Led by Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmesand Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson, thirteen episodes ofSherlockhave been produced so far, each of which loosely adapts one of Doyle’s tales with plenty of modern twists and turns along the way.

The series has been met with critical acclaim throughout most of its run (what is currently the last episode was met with a divisive response from both critics and audiences alike), with praise heaped on the writing, the way that the beloved character has been brought into the modern day, and the lead performances. Of course, both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have become increasingly busy since the release ofSherlock, with the two actors now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe among other major projects.

Still, should the pair ever find a free moment, it certainly sounds like Moffat will be eagerly waiting to put pen to paper and bringSherlockback for more.

Steven Moffat is Not the Only One Hoping for More Sherlock

Moffat is far from the only one hoping to reviveSherlockat some point in the near future. Series co-creator Mark Gatiss, who also stars in the series as Sherlock Holmes’s older brother Mycroft, has also previously stated that the teamhas “not shut the door” on a potentialSherlockSeason 5. Similarly, it is all down to whether Cumberbatch and Freeman want in. “But you may have noticed, the cast are very busy. So that’s where we are at the moment really. I mean… who can say?” Gatiss added at the time.

But what do Cumberbatch and Freeman think about all this? Well, for Cumberbatch’s part,he will “never say never” to the idea of one day bringingSherlockback for more adventures. “I’m the worst person to ask on this because I never say never, obviously. But I don’t know,” theDoctor Strangestar said back in March 2021. “And I’m the worst person to ask because my slate’s pretty, pretty full at the moment, as is Martin [Freeman, Watson] and all the other key players involved. So, who knows? Maybe one day, if the script’s right. And I say ‘the script,’ maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now.”
