A lot can change in a year. It’s been 12 months since Lucasfilm releasedSolo: A Star Wars Storyand fans are campaigning on social media for a sequel. The hashtag,#MakeSolo2Happen, is trending on Twitter as of this writing and it’s not for aFree Solosequel, even though that would probably be pretty popular too. The campaign for a possibleSolo 2is a far cry from the initial reactions to the first installment a year ago.
Solo: A Star Wars Storyhit theaters less than six months after the release ofThe Last Jedi, and manyStar Warsfans felt like it was way too soon for a new movie. In addition, Rian Johnson’s first foray into the franchise proved to be divisive, to say the least, which led to a pretty intense backlash from a certain group of fans. As a result,Solounderperformed at the box office with $392.9 million, which is a failure in the world ofStar Wars.
As predicted by manyStar Warsfans, the response toSolohas gotten better with age and now fans are calling for a sequel. In today’s times, it’s common for fans to rally on social media to try and make changes in the things they follow or care about. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are theGame of Thronesfans who are petitioning for HBO to completely remake the final season of the show, which just came to a close on Sunday evening. In a world of online petitions and campaigns, it’s refreshing to see one being positive.Chewbacca star Joonas Suotamois even getting in on the fun. He had this to say.
“I hear this is trending and I’m putting my vote into the pile! #MakeSolo2Happen #StarWars I want the petition!”
With that being said, it doesn’t look like Lucasfilm andDisneyhave any plans to makeSolo 2or any otherStar Warsspin-offs in the near future. Many have speculated thatSolo’s box office performance put an end to the development of theBoba FettandObi-Wanmovies, which fans were looking forward to. For now, those movies have been put on the backburner, which means the possibility ofSolo 2is pretty slim, thought the studio was open to making one before the first one hit theaters. Star Alden Ehrenreich signed a three-picture deal with the studio and the Darth Maul scene certainly left plenty of room for another movie.
Soloalso had a pretty rough time behind-the-scenes, which also more than likely played a hand in itssubpar box office success. Disney and Lucasfilm are currently focusing on getting the Disney+ seriesThe Mandalorianout in November andThe Rise of Skywalkerout in theaters in December. From there, the focus will shift toGame of Thronesshowrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' new trilogy. Regardless,Star Warsfans seem to want to see Lucasfilm make anotherSolomovie. But, willWalt Disney Studiosactually do it? We’ll just have to wait and see.
