Fans are still buzzing overMarvel and Sony’s announcement earlier this monththatSpider-Manwill finally join theMarvel Cinematic Universe, with the beloved web slinger reportedly set to make his debut inCaptain America: Civil War, although that hasn’t been officially confirmed by Marvel yet. Yesterday, Sony Pictures announced thatTom Rothmanwill step in forAmy Pascal, who left her job as Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman and Motion Picture Group president just weeks ago. Some have worried that this may hinder the newSpider-Manreboot, sinceTom Rothmanoversaw superhero flops such asDaredevilandElektraduring his tenure at 20th Century Fox. However, a new report from Latino-Review reveals that Marvel may have more control over Spidey than originally thought.
The site backs up previous reports thatThe Amazing Spider-ManandThe Amazing Spider-Man 2producersAvi AradandMatthew Tolmachare “producers in name only” with the newSpider-Manmovie, meaning they have no creative say in where the franchise goes from here on out. The site also claims that “the old guard” at Sony will have “no financial involvement whatsoever and no direct creative control,” which essentially means that Marvel is basically calling all of the shots.
It should be noted that the official announcement earlier this month revealed that Sony Pictures will continue to, “finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of theSpider-Manfilms.” However, yet another report fromBadass Digestsuggests that language may have been put in the press release, “to help Sony avoid some embarrassment, to make this look less like admitting defeat.” Right after the announcement was made, there was speculation that this is just the first step in Marvel fully re-acquiring theSpider-Manrights back from Sony. While nothing is set in stone, that may be closer to happening, if these reports turn out to be true.
