Spike Lee is not making a sequel or a prequel toDo the Right Thing. The 1989 movie is considered to be one of the greatest of all time and is deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Whispers of a possible sequel started to get louder when Lee revisited the Mookie character forRed Hook Summer, but he has zero plans to make the sequel, though he wouldn’t mind revisiting another one of his older projects.
WhileSpike Leefans would love to see the return ofMookieand the rest of the characters fromDo the Right Thing, he isn’t open to returning to the movie, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year. The movie already laid everything out the way it was supposed to be, and Lee already showed what Mookie is up to afterwards. So, there’s really no need to go back. Lee had this to say about the idea of a sequel.
“People all the time want me to do a sequel toDo the Right Thing-I’m not doing that. There are just things that I’m not gonna touch. But other things, you know,I feel better about revisiting. But notDo the Right Thing. There is gonna be no prequel or sequel or remake ofDo the Right Thing. That’s not happening.”
Do the Right Thingwas produced, written, and directed by Spike Lee. The comedy-drama stars Lee, Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson, Martin Lawrence, and Rosie Perez. The story follows a Brooklyn neighborhood’srising racial tensions, which comes to a violent head on a hot summer day. The movie was deemed controversial upon its release after some reviewers stated that the movie could cause black audiences to go out and riot, which infuriated Lee, and still does to this day.
Spike Lee isn’t going back toDo the Right Thing. But, he would like to revisit 1988’s musical comedySchool Daze. “I would love to doSchool Dazeas a Broadway musical,” says Lee, which could be a pretty big deal if it’s pulled off correctly. In the2014 Sony email hack scandal, it was revealed that Lee was working on a sequel for the movie that would have starred Drake and Kevin Hart. It sounds like the Broadway musical approach is a much better idea.
Spike Lee is currently riding high on the success ofBlacKkKlansman, which was just nominated for a number of Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards. The movie also has its eyes set for some Academy Awards too, but we won’t know about those until January. For now, Lee does not seem at all interested in a sequel toDo the Right Thing, so fans will have to look forward to a possibleSchool DazeBroadway musical instead.
