The earlybox officeand critical success ofStar Wars: The Force Awakenshas fans excited for the future of this franchise for the first time in several years. As of now, there are five more movies coming out over the next five years, one of which is directorColin Trevorrow’sStar Wars: Episode IX.Star Wars: The Force Awakensgave fans a number of unanswered questions to ponder, specifically about the mysterious Rey.Colin Trevorrowrevealed in a new interview withEntertainment Tonightthat he has seen all of the theories about Rey online, and assures fans they’ll be satisfied with the answers to several unanswered questions, including who her parents are.
“I’ve seen all of the theories. What I do know is that we’re going to verify that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens but in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it. So we’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was-it’s something that happened a long time ago [in a galaxy] far, far away, we’re just telling you what happened.”
The most abundant theory swirling around the internet is that Rey is the daughter ofLuke Skywalker, who she meets for the first time at the very end ofStar Wars: The Force Awakens. Others claim that she is actually a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi, while some think she’s the daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa, which would make the villainous Kylo Ren her brother. Of course,Colin Trevorrowwouldn’t address any of the rumors directly, but he did add that he wants to honor the movies that came beforeStar Wars: Episode IX.
“By the time we get to Episode IX, I look at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies. It’s something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of 40 years…Star Warsis a belief system, it’s not just a story and it’s not just a movie, and it’s something I take very seriously.”
We still have a long way to go beforeStar Wars: Episode IXhits theaters, though. The first spinoff,Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, hits theaters on December 16, followed byStar Wars: Episode VIIIon July 04, 2025,Star Wars Anthology: Han Soloon July 13, 2025,Star Wars: Episode IXin 2019 andStar Wars Anthology: Boba Fettin 2020.
