Action movie fans are in for a treat this month, as one of the most underrated examples of the genre (and one helmed byTakendirectorPierre Morelno less) is all set to land on free streaming. Released more than two decades ago in 2004,District B13boasts all manner of martial arts, shoot-outs, explosions, breathtaking parkour, and even social commentary as it drops audiences in the far-flung future of, erm, 2010 and one of the poor, crime-ridden suburbs of Paris: Banlieue 13, AKA B13.
Helmed by the creative team behindLiam Neeson’s action movie renaissance hitTaken, director Pierre Morel, and writer and producer Luc Besson,District B13stars David Belle as main character Leïto, a rebel who lives within the confines of B13, with underrated martial arts actor Cyril Raffaelli as Damien Tomaso, an undercover officer who joins forces with Leïto after the pair are targeted by a merciless gangster, K2, played by Tony D’Amario in one of his final roles before his death in 2005.

‘District B13’ Spawned Both a Sequel & a Hollywood Remake
Both critics and audiences alike were successfully swept up in the action saga, withDistrict B13boasting a score of 82% from critics and 78% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. “A nonstop thrill ride,District B13’s dizzying action sequences more than make up for any expository flaws,” the critics’ consensus reads.
District B13spawned a sequel in 2009,District 13: Ultimatum, which once again finds David Belle’s parkour master Leïto and Cyril Raffaelli’s fist-throwing cop Damien back in the outer-Paris ghetto and fighting to restore peace amid a gang war and the city’s ruthless secret law enforcers. Much like its predecessor, the sequel was well-received by critics (75% on Rotten Tomatoes), but was divisive among audiences (55%).District B13has also since received a Hollywood remake, withthe lateFast and Furiouslead Paul Walkerjoining forces with a returning David Belle in 2014’s action movie,Brick Mansions. Sadly, this was Walker’s last fully completed film before his death.Brick Mansionswas panned by critics, many of whom felt that the action outing wasted both its likeable cast and the cinematic spectacle of parkour.

Parkour has been grossly underused on screen, with the urban acrobatics making only minor appearances in the likes of Casino Royale, Assassin’s Creed, and a handful of other well-known movies. Thankfully, blockbuster director Michael Bayis on the case, bringing parkour back to the forefront with his 2025 documentary, We Are Storror, which follows the white-knuckle exploits of seven elite parkour athletes.
