The cast of theMortal Kombatsequel is getting some new names who will be joining a handful of returning favorites, and the latest word is thatTati Gabrielleis currently in talks for a key role. PerThe Hollywood Reporter, theChilling Adventures of Sabrinastar is in final talks to play the role of Jade inMortal Kombat 2. This follows recent reports ofThe Boysstar Karl Urban also entering “final talks” to take on the role of another fan favorite from the video games, Johnny Cage. According to the new THR report, Urban is now officially “on board” for that role.
Simon McQuoid is back in the director’s chair after helming the 2021 film. The new film comes with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight). THR reports that other cast members from the original, including Jessica McNamee (Sonya) and Josh Lawson (Kano), are “expected” to return. Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim previously said he’s signed on to potentially appear in several sequels, and it’s most likely he will also return. Meanwhile, Hiroyuki Sanada has also saidhe hopes to come back as Scorpionin the sequel.

In the video games, Jade is an assassin and a longtime friend of Kitana. Producer Todd Garner has also teased that Kitana will make an appearance inMortal Kombat 2, perThe Hashtag Show, but no reports have yet emerged about that fan favorite’s casting. Along with Jade, Kitana, and Johnny Cage, Garner also suggested that the sequel will bring in Shao Khan, Quan Chi, and Baraka.
Gabrielle can be seen in Netflix’sYouand previously starred on the streamer’s showChilling Adventures of Sabrina. She was also part of the cast of the limited seriesKaleidoscope, which premiered on Netflix earlier this year. Gabrielle also does voicover work forThe Owl Houseas well asThe Emoji Movie. More recently, she appeared in last year’s feature film adaptation ofUncharted.

Round 2: Fight!
The firstMortal Kombatwas released during the pandemic, ultimately pulling in around $84 million at the box office. It was released simultaneously for streaming on HBO Max and it had a much better performance with viewers at home. The film was named by the streamer as the most-watched movie of that year with more than three million viewers, pulling in more viewers than other big name titles likeGodzilla vs. Kong,Dune, andThe Matrix Resurrections.Mortal Kombatstar Lewis Tan spoke about how Warner Bros. was happy with that success and that the sequel would be even more “insane.”
“They’re very happy with the movie, and obviously, it performed really well,” Tan said, perComicBook.com. “It’s one of the most-viewed films of their Warner Bros. slate, even though it came out at the worst time ever possible.”
Teasing how this sequel has the involvement ofMortal Kombatco-creator Ed Boon, Tan added, “But no, we’re full steam ahead. And now, we have Ed Boon with us as well, so we got the stamp of approval from the legend himself. Number two is just going to be absolutely insane. Way bigger.”
Mortal Kombat 2doesn’t yet have a release date. Filming will take place in Australia from June through September.
