In the future, a war between the human race and robots with artificial intelligence breaks out. A former soldier named Joshua (John David Washington) is reeling from a tragic past involving his time as a double agent in the robot militia led by Harun (Ken Watanabe). In Joshua’s quiet life with his pregnant wife Maya (Gemma Chan), his past is revealed. The American military forces raid their home, and Joshua’s true intentions are made clear. Maya is killed in the escape, and Joshua is taken back by the military forces.

Joshua Gets a Shot at Redemption
Years pass, and the military forces (including Joshua) are still at warwith the A.I. robots, which have now been outlawed in America. China is the only place where A.I. is still allowed to live freely, continuing the war against humans. This conflict fuels the war until the humans get a golden opportunity.
A supposed lab is holding the secret needed to win the war. When an operation into the compound happens, Joshua is sent to guard the secret underground room of the military compound. He stumbles into the room and finds an A.I. girl (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) hidden away. After the failed raid by Chinese authorities, Joshua and The A.I. escape while Howell (Allison Janney) is captured.

Now, our duo’s mission is to meet the A.I.’s architect, the mysterious Nirmata. This involves Traveling across analmost post-apocalypticworld while the duo tries to remain in hiding. They eventually cross paths with Joshua’s old friend Drew (Sturgill Simpson) and his girlfriend Kami (Veronica Ngo). Drew attempts to extract the information from Alfie until the American military returns. An all-out brawl occurs, with many military soldiers being killed in the process. Howell, along with her cohort McBride (Marc Menchaca), they eventually are captured by the Chinese. This occurs simultaneously while Alfie and Joshua are separated.
The remaining American forces (Joshua, Howell, and McBride) regroup for a last stand in Vietnam. Likeany good sci-fi film, this is where the final confrontation is getting ready to occur. Joshua and the Americans reach the compound. Eventually, Joshua finds Alfie while a war is raging on the outside. The two finally begin their mission to reach Nirmata and end this war once and for all. Along the way, they get more surprises than they bargain for.

The Final Mission Begins
Joshua and Alfie finally find what they have wanted all along: Nirmata. They discover that Maya is still alive and has been put into a medically induced coma. As Joshua is reeling from the shock, Howell arrives. After having lost McBride, Howell is hellbent on winning the war and attempts to stop Joshua. Once she mistakenly gets stuck with a thermal charge, it kills her and her soldiers while trying to take it off. Joshua finally unplugs Maya, and both he and Alfie escape to the government’s ship in the sky.
Once they arrive at the base, they intend to have Alfie shut Nirmata down. It is mostly a success that leaves one more obstacle. They arrive at the base as Joshua works to reach Nirmata’s center. Meanwhile, Alfie tries to reach the control room to shut Nirmata down with her technical. Alfie and Joshua’s mission looks to be completed while the war rages on Earth between Harun and the Americans. It’sa realistic invasionthat Joshua and Alfie have managed to put on hold.

They finally destroy the system, leaving the duo to find an escape plan. As Joshua is coming back from outside, he manages to find an escape pod. Making sure Alfie is secure, he realizes the escape pod does not have enough room for them both. After a tearful goodbye, Joshua sends Alfie’s escape pod on its way. As Alfie escapes back to Earth, Joshua wanders the crumbling base. Approaching the base’s garden, Joshua finds Maya in her synthetic “creator” body. Thanks to the memory chip Joshua inserted earlier, this “Maya” is loaded with her memories. They run into each other’s arms and share a kiss as the base explodes around them. Meanwhile, as Alfie reaches Earth, she smiles, seeing that the battle among the A.I. has reached its end.
