Lin Shaye, best known for her work in theInsidiousfranchise, has joined the upcoming reboot ofThe Grudge. Sony is getting ready to head into production on a new version ofThe Grudge, which originally debuted for American audiences in 2004. The remake has been in the works for a while now, but seems to be coming together rather quickly and is starting to take shape. Shaye, the latest addition to the cast, is another modern horror icon who has boarded this increasingly intriguing “reimagining” of the supernatural tale.

Recently, it was announced that Andrea Riseborough and Demian Bichir willstar in this new takeonThe Grudge, alongside John Cho. Bichir has become something of a staple in modern horror offerings himself, having starred inAlien: Covenantlast year, and also set to feature in the upcomingConjuringspin-offThe Nun. With the addition of Lin Shaye, who has in her own right becoming something of a surprisingmodern horror icon, the cast of this reboot is shaping up quite nicely. While nobody was really asking for aGrudgereboot, there’s enough here to make it seem like this could be more than a cash grab.

As an actress, Lin Shaye has been working since the 70s and has more than 200 credits to her name. But it’s been her work as Elise Rainier in Blumhouse’sInsidiousmovies that have really put her on the map, making the 74-year-old actress an unconventional horror heroine. She’s also proved that she can be a box office draw, as she was the lead of this year’sInsidious: The Last Key, which grossed an impressive $166 million worldwide, a new best for the horror franchise. It’s not hard to imagine that helped her land this new role inThe Grudge, but at this time, there are no details on the role she’s going to play in the movie.

Nicolas Pesce, who is best known for directing 2016’s horror flickThe Eyes of My Mother, hasbeen tapped by Sony to helmthisGrudgereboot, from a script he wrote himself. The original 2002 Japanese horror hit,Ju-On: The Grudge, was written and directed by Takashi Shimizu, who also directed the 2004 American remake for Sony, which starred Sarah Michelle-Gellar in the lead role. Shimizu also returned forThe Grudge 2. The early 2000s was a popular time for American remakes of Japanese horror, withThe Grudgebeing one of the most popular examples.

The Grudgewas a massive hit for Sony at the time, grossing $187.2 million worldwide, working from a budget of just $10 million. Like many studio horror offerings, the movie became a hit despite relatively poor reception from critics. The Grudgecurrently sits at a 39 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s no release date yet for Sony’s upcoming remake, but Sam Raimi, who produced the 2004 version, is once again on board to produce this take.
