We’ve got some juicy new details onThe Mandalorianfrom Taika Waititi, who is one of the directors lined up for the series. This is the first ever live-action series set within the Star Wars galaxy, which is coming to the Disney+ streaming service later this year. So what can we expect? According to Waititi, lots of Stormtroopers and lots of bounty hunters.
Taika Waititi, who previously directedThor: Ragnarok, was at the Television Critics Association press tour promoting theWhat We Do In the ShadowsTV series. The topic eventually turned toThe Mandalorian. The filmmaker explained that this is very different than working with Marvel and that the tone will be in line with the original Star Wars trilogy. Here’s what Waititi had to say about it.
“Star Warsis very different to Marvel style. They know that the tone of the first films really should be kind of adhered to. That’s what the fans like and you can’t really disrespect it I guess is a nicer way of saying can’t put too many jokes in. There’s a bit, definitely my tone is in there, the dialogue and stuff like that.”
The series will center on a lone gunslinger making his way through the Outer Rim, to be played byPedro Pascal. It takes place betweenReturn of the JediandThe Force Awakens. Beyond that, many details remain scarce. However, Taika Waititi revealed that it should make fans of Boba Fett (who hasn’t been confirmed to appear in the series) very happy.
“For most kids growing up with those films, [Boba Fett] was one of the most favorite characters, even though he’s barely in the films. Just the idea of bounty hunters, the helmets are so cool. Just getting to see characters like that and getting to shoot with them is pretty cool.”
We already know that the deadly robot bounty hunter IG-88 will be featured in the series. One can only hope that, somehow, Boba Fett will show up, redeeming his unceremonious end after falling into the Sarlacc Pit at the end ofReturn of the Jedi. Speaking further, Taika Waititi praised executive producer/writer Jon Favreau, in addition to confirming that there will be plenty of Stormtroopers to go around.
“Favreau’s a genius and so smart and so good at what he does and creating these worlds. The scripts are really great. It was really fun doing something in the Star Wars universe. It was every kid’s dream just to see a stormtrooper. When you’re doing these scenes with like 50 or 60 of them, it’s pretty amazing. I loved it.”
Dave Filoni (The Clone Wars), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates) are also on board to direct episodes of the series.
