Following the first trailer for Warner Bros.‘The Martianthat debuted last month, the studio has released new photos, courtesy ofTotal Film. These images showMatt Damon’s Mark Watney, stranded on theRed Planetall by himself with no way back to Earth. We still have just a few months untilRidley Scott’s sci-fi adaptation hits theaters, so these photos will surely be the first of many.
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bringThe Martianhome, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission.

As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master directorRidley Scott,The Martianfeatures a star studded cast that includesJessica Chastain,Kristen Wiig,Kate Mara,Michael Peña,Jeff Daniels,Chiwetel Ejiofor, andDonald Glover. The Martianwill hit theaters on October 2, going up against The Weinstein Company’sAdam Jones.
This adaptation of Andy Weir’s beloved novel reportedly uses “real science” with “no movie cheats,” as Mark Watney tries to find a way back home. Director Ridley Scott also producedThe Martian, alongside Simon Kinberg, Michael Schaefer, Mark Huffam and Aditya Sood. These photos also include the “Mars walkers” and the cover of this months’ Total Film, featuringMatt Damonin his astronaut gear.

It’s very possible thatThe Martiancould be this year’sGravity, with its plot about literally being lost in space, although at least Mark Watney is stranded on an actual planet, and not in the vast expanse of space. With its recent shift from Thanksgiving weekend to October 2, thesci-fi moviealso opens in the same early October release slot thatGravityopened in. CouldThe Martianbe just as successful asGravity? We’ll find out in a few months, but until then, check out these photos.
