On Monday,The X-Filesevent series wrapped up its six-episode run, leaving fans wondering if they’ll ever seeMulder and Scully(David DuchovnyandGillian Anderson) again.David Duchovnyhas said in the past that he’d be open to returning in the truncated event series format, although he wouldn’t come back for a full season of more than 20 episodes. We haven’t heard anything official from Fox yet, butThe X-FilescreatorChris Carterrevealed in an interview withThe New York Timesthat he’s almost certain the show will be back. Here’s what he had to say below, but be warned, there will be SPOILERS if you didn’t watch the finale.
“I can tell you, almost without a doubt, we will come back. I don’t know how or when - Fox owns the show. But because the ratings were what they were, I think the show will come back one way or the other. I just had an informal conversation with Dana Walden [a co-chief executive of Fox Television Group], who said they would like more. The question is when. There’s an appetite for it and I think everyone is excited about doing more. It’s just how to get it done.”
The finale,My Struggle II, ended with the fate of the world in the balance, after a deadly plague had spread throughout the globe. Scully was set to distribute a vaccine to save Mulder’s life, before a massive alien spaceship appeared above her. Longtime fans ofThe X-Filesknow these endings are par for the course. When asked about the ending,Chris Carterrevealed that fans would expect nothing less from the series,
“WellThe X-Fileshas traditionally ended with a cliffhanger, and people who know us well would expect nothing less. It’s the way we always did it. You have to let us show how we are going to get them down from the cliff. We’ve always ended with a cliffhanger. This isn’t a movie; it’s aTV series. Any resolution would have to lead to more stories to tell. If they feel cheated, they’re not familiar with how we’ve done the show. I think they’d feel more cheated if we resolved it and didn’t come back at all.”
The new episodes of The X-Files have broken worldwide ratings records, with more than 50 million international viewers watching the two-night premiere event in the first three days following its debut on Fox channels in over 80 countries. Last week, Fox presidentDavid Maddensaid the network is interested in bringing the show back, but they would have to work out the complicated schedules ofDavid Duchovny,Gillian Andersonand creatorChris Carter, making sure their work schedules sync up, and that there aren’t any conflicts.Chris Carteradded that, while he’s certain arenewalwill happen, fans shouldn’t expect an official announcement anytime soon.
“No, because it’s complicated. It’s really a matter of when the actors would be able to do it, when they’re available at the same time. We’d also need a schedule that would give us enough lead time to make it interesting. Nothing’s been written yet. I’ve written down a lot of ideas but there’s nothing even close to a script.”
This new six-episode run introduced fans to a slew of new guest stars, such asJoel McHale(Community),Robbie Amell(The Flash),Lauren Ambrose(Dig, Six Feet Under),Annabeth Gish(The Bridge), Annet Mahendru (The Americans),Rhys Darby(Flight of the Conchords),Kumail Nanjiani(Silicon Valley). There have been rumors that a spinoff featuringRobbie AmellandLauren Ambrose’s Agent Mills and Agent Einstein, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
