Warning: This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*
Thunderbolts*directorJake Schreierhas revealed that there was one big moment in Marvel’s newest release where he was not behind the camera, as the scene was not even part of the original production. That is, of course, the post-credits scene, which has been revealed in several social media posts to have a direct connection toAvengers: Doomsday, as it seems likely that directing duties were taken over by Joe and Anthony Russo.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered one of its best movies inThunderbolts*, but all eyes are starting to turn towards what comes next – the ending of the Multiverse Saga. This means that the film ends with a post-credits scene is a direct lead into the events of the next Avengers movie. According to Schreier, though, the footage seen in cinemas this weekend was not directed by him, although he was on set, and was filmed after the rest of the movie wrapped. He toldComicBook:
“I was there when it was filmed. I can say that it comes from the set of a production that might be starting production right around now.”

Currently, the only Marvel movie known to be in production isAvengers: Doomsday, and although principal photography on the film has just started this week, it is likely that theThunderbolts*scene was directed by the Russos as one that will also appear in the opening moments ofAvengers: Doomsday.
Thunderbolts* Is Giving the MCU the Pre-Avengers Kick It Needs
While this summer is going to be a battle between James Gunn’sSupermanand Marvel’s First Family,The Fantastic Four, for now, this weekend is going to belong toThunderbolts*. Coming on the back of the so-so performance and lukewarm critical reception ofCaptain America: Brave New World, the MCU needed something to up the stakes – and it is getting it thanks to the most unlikely team-building exercise sinceGuardians of the Galaxy. According to the blurb:
“In Thunderbolts*, Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?”

Returning to their Marvel Cinematic Universe roles are Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The cast also includes newcomers to the MCU—Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer and Wendell Edward Pierce.
Although the casting announcement forAvengers: Doomsdayhas already revealed that the majority of the Thunderbolts team – or New Avengers if you prefer – will survive the events of the movie, and while that could be seen as a massive spoiler for the film long before it was released, the enjoyment of the story is usually in the telling and not the outcome.
