“I make mass entertainment. There is an outsized importance placed on Oscars…Films that not many people are going to see. A wedge has been driven into the industry. Are you an artist or an entertainer? Tom doesn’t see them as mutually exclusive.”

Cruise’s commitment to the movie business, and particularly getting audiences to see them on the big screen, has becomeeven clearer of latewith the emergence of streaming releases amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The actor, who remains of the biggest names in Hollywood, has fought hard to get people back to the movies, with McQuarrie confirming his love for bringing artistic entertainment to as many people as possible.
This passion was further confirmed by Cruise’sMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Oneco-star Hayley Atwell, who revealed that Cruise had a line in the action sequel changed when he became concerned that audiences might not understand it.
“He doesn’t want to make movies now to punish an audience…He doesn’t want films with the message that if you do not understand this you’re not smart.”
