With every new year comes a new set of anniversaries for fans to celebrate, and this year marks the 30th Anniversary of the movie that madeTom Cruisea global superstar,Top Gun. The blockbuster took in $176 million, making it the highest-grossing movie at thebox officein 1986, which, when you adjust for inflation, equates to a $414.5 million today. Over the past 30 years, development on the sequelTop Gun 2has had more than its fair share of ups and downs. Now it seems the project may be on the right track, thanks to a newtweetfrom producerJerry Bruckheimerwhich confirmsTom Cruisewill be back to star.

The last we heard aboutTop Gun 2was back in November, when originalTop GunstarVal Kilmerrevealed through social media that he was offered a role in the sequel, although the actor later clarified that he “jumped the gun” in making that announcement.Tom Cruisehimself also teased last summer that he hopes to havereal jetswith no CGI during the flying scenes. While it still isn’t known when production may begin, the fact thatTom CruiseandJerry Bruckheimerare meeting about the project is a good sign.

Back in September 2014,The Jungle BookwriterJustin Markssigned on to work on the script, although no story details have been revealed quite yet. Over the past few years, many other writers have taken a crack at the script, such asChristopher McQuarrie(Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation) and the writing team ofAshley MillerandZack Stentz(Power Rangers).Peter Craigwrote a version of the script that almost went into production in 2012, before the tragic death of directorTony Scott.

Jerry Bruckheimerrevealed in April 2014 that the story will highlight traditionalpilotslike Maverick and the new drone planes currently being used by the Air Force. That was beforeJustin Markscame on board to write the script, though, and it isn’t known if the story has changed since then.David Ellisonis producing through his Skydance company, with Dana Goldberg set to executive produce.

The project doesn’t have adirectorattached at this time, and it isn’t known ifJerry BruckheimerandTom Cruiseare ready to move forward withJustin Marks' script, or if they are seeking yet another writer. Hopefully we’ll hear more details on this sequel soon, but until then, take a look at the photo withJerry BruckheimerandTom Cruisebelow.
