TheWatchmenSan Diego Comic-Con trailer offers up our best look yet at the upcoming HBO series from Damon Lindelof. Since the massively popularGame of Thronesended, the network is looking for its next big thing and hoping theWatchmenseries will do the trick. And so far, Lindelof’s series looks very promising. There was some confusion when the show was first announced, but it’s now clear what Lindelof is trying to achieve by bringing a different spin on Alan Moore’s iconic source material to the small screen.
TheDoomsday Clockis ticking in the latest look at theWatchmenseries. HBO did not have a panel for the upcoming project atSDCC, but they decided to drop a new trailer anyway and potential viewers and fans should be pretty happy. Familiar motifs, characters, and dialogue are present in the new look atWatchmen. We even get a small tease of Rorschach saying his infamous, “all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, ‘Save us,’ and I’ll look down and whisper ‘No,'” line.
WhenWatchmenwas first announced,Damon Lindelofdeclared, “We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago.” Instead, Lindelof has taken the material and done something new with it, which is a bold maneuver and also very smart. They’re taking the world that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons created and giving it a fresh spin, which involves some of the same characters and a time jump of ten years from the events of the source material and Zack Snyder’s divisive big screen adaptation.
“Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted,” stated Damon Lindelof when talking about his idea forWatchmen. The show isn’t a reboot or a sequel, but it just so happens to take place in the same universe of the source material. When going further into what the series is attempting to do, Lindelof used some biblical examples to get his point across. He had this to say.
“Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be withWatchmen. The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love.Ozymandiassaved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.”
While there was noWatchmenpanel for Comic-Con this year, many expected to, at the very least, get the release date. While a trailer is obviously something to be excited about, we still have no idea when HBO is going to launch the show, though it is expected to premiere before the end of the year. you may check out the latest look at theWatchmenseries below, thanks to the HBO YouTube channel.
