Fans knew that Joel McHale was added to the cast ofYellowjacketsSeason 3. And now, the details of his character have finally been revealed. In the shocking Episode 6 twist, a man and a woman appear in the wilderness with the ladies. But in Episode 7, it’s revealed that there was another man with them, played by McHale.
How could they be there, as if they were casually camping out in the forest? It’s a twist no one saw coming and poses more questions than it provides answers. What happens next, however, will shock viewers to their core and suggests that the ladies are far more gone than ever anticipated.

Who Are the Three People in the Wilderness?
Looking back to that shocking twist in Episode 6 entitled “Thanksgiving (Canada),” two people show up at a bonfire where the ladies (and Travis) are gleefully consuming Ben’s (Steven Krueger) cooked body, one of theworst crimes the girls committed on the show. The man looks to the side and sees Ben’s decapitated head and visibly jumps in horror, declaring, “What the f**k?” What happens next is something no one saw coming.
Lottie (Courtney Eaton)runs up behind him with an axe and bashes him in the head, the axe cutting right through as he falls forward to the ground. The woman looks terrified and a second man who was hiding behind them, played by McHale, shoots an arrow that hits Melissa (Jenna Burgess) in the chest in retaliation. The ladies begin to chase them, and the surviving man and woman go running. Who are these three people? The answer is provided in the first part of Episode 7, “Croak,” which travels back to three days before their encounter with the ladies.
What Was the Trio Doing in the Wilderness?
The man and woman who first appear are named Edwin (Nelson Franklin) and Hannah.They are from a university, studying frogs and their mating rituals. They were sent to the wilderness where they were to spend six months.Kodi (McHale) was sent along with them as a wilderness guide. They set up cameras and capture moments with the frogs, and capture frogs in mason jars to continue their studies back at their camp.
They are set up with tents and supplies, including food and a satellite phone to contact people back home in case of an emergency. Hannah alludes to how the “last team” left a stash of protein bars when Edwin expresses worry about running out of food.This explains howthe supply Ben foundin the pit got there. It also explains what “KUH,” which was written on the case, means: it’s the initials of the university.
Hold On, That ‘Yellowjackets’ Death Came Out of Nowhere
If you thought Natalie’s death in Season 2 of ‘Yellowjackets’ was shocking, this one will shake you to your core.
The dynamic between the three is interesting. Edwin and Hannah are dating and Kodi is the odd man out, a position he is clearly not used to being in. He recognizes that Hannah has a slight crush on him as the burly, handsome survivalist who is the complete antithesis of her boyfriend. Kodi is the rebellious, James Dean type while Edwin is her safe place. Hannah’s googly eyes suggest she has daydreams about Kodi, even though she clearly loves Edwin.
Kodi, for his part, plays into her obvious attraction perfectly. He’s a tall, dark, and handsome guy, and he knows it. Add to that the fact that he can fend for himself in the wilderness, and he knows Hannah is fawning over him. Edwin can see it, too, though he recognizes it’s innocent and understandable that she has an attraction to Kodi’s magnetism. He appears mildly threatened but unconcerned.
When Kodi convinces them to indulge in cannabis with him, they get high and start to tousle in the tent.As they shift around fighting for the phone receiver, the unit’s connection breaks. Kodi isn’t worried because he doesn’t think there’s any reason they would need to call for help before the research project timeframe is up anyway. Nonetheless, they feel panicked that they are stuck now for six months with no connection to home.
It’s after this event that the trio are sitting around when they hear the loud singing and chanting of the women and walk to investigate. This proves to be the wrong decision as they encounter the bewildered women. Some of the ladies instantly believe these three people could be their ticket home. But the survival instinct that has dominated their minds since the crash kicks in, and they’re out for the hunt.
What Happens to Hannah and Kodi?
What happens to Hannah and Kodi isn’t confirmed in this episode, though it can be deduced that they do not survive. In current-day segments, Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), one ofthe best characters inYellowjackets,has temporarily moved her family into a motel, terrified that someone is out to kill her and the other ladies. Callie (Sarah Desjardin) shows her mother the tape that was left at their doorstep, apologizing for having taken and hidden it.
Shauna turns to Van (Lauren Ambrose) to find a machine that can play it, andwhen they do, they hear Hannah’s scream after Lottie kills Edwin. Later, when listening on her own, Shauna hears more on the tape: a message Hannah left for her supposed daughter, telling her she loves her. Clearly, the daughter eventually got the message, and some believe this is the mysterious character that Hilary Swank could be playing.
Ranking Which Yellowjacket Will Most Likely Be the “Only One Left”
The Yellowjackets made it out of the Wilderness alive, but they might not survive what Season 3 has in store.
Van comments that the only people who know what happened in that tape are them or dead, which all but confirms that not only is Hannah dead but so is Kodi. The question is how this happens. And who snuck the tape out of the wilderness so that it could get into the hands of, very likely, Hannah’s now grown daughter?
Back in the wilderness, Kodi wants to keep running, but Hannah thinks it’s safest to go back to their camp. They split up and Hannah hides, terrified that the ladies will find her. It’s during this time that she quietly makes the recording.
