Alan Ritchsonhas landed on his feet with the role of Jack Reacher, but the 41-year-old had to wait a long time to get his big breakout role in Hollywood. While discussing his career withMen’s Health, the actor remembered one of the potentially career-defining roles that got away from him; Thor.
Although Ritchson has yet to get a shot at playing a role in the MCU, he recalled auditioning for the part of the God of Thunder in 2011’sThor,but didn’t get very far because he was overly confident that his looks would get him through. He explained:

I didn’t take it seriously. I was like, ‘They’ll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting.’
However, it seems that Ritchson’s opinion couldn’t be any further from the truth. Following his audition, he says that this team was told that the “role had been his to lose” and that he had simply not “had the craft.” Of course, this opened the way for Chris Hemsworth to nip in and snatch up the role for himself, andthe rest is Marvel history.

Ritchson did briefly get to play around in the superhero genre withhis appearance as Aquaman in the TV seriesSmallville, but that was also quite short-lived and did not become the big breakthrough he expected. Almost a decade later, and the first episode ofReacherSeason 1 opened up the floodgates on dozens of offers, and now, as Ritchson himself put it, “I knew my life had changed.”
