While doing press for his new movieChappieearlier today,Hugh Jackmanwas asked torespond to yesterday’s massive newsthatSpider-Manis joining theMarvel Cinematic Universe. Of course,Hugh Jackmanis not involved with Spider-Man, with his beloved Marvel comic book character Wolverine currently controlled by 20th Century Fox. Since this blockbuster deal went through, which many thought would never happen, there may be an extremely slim chance of Wolverine clashing with MCU characters. SinceHugh Jackmanhas said in the past that he would love to square off with Iron Man,Sceen Crushasked the actor about the prospect of this ever happening. Here’s what he had to say.
“That’s really exciting news. I’ve always loved the really basic idea of the comic book world, where, on a Friday night, you can have a couple of beers with a mate and go, ‘Oh man, wouldn’t it be great to see Wolverine face off against Iron Man?’ And bang, Monday morning, someone’s drawing it. I always thought that was cool. It’s a very complicated world of rights, and who buys what at what price, and I think it’s great they’re all melding in. I’m sure by the time all of that is resolved, it will be past my day, but you never know.”
Of course, 20th Century Fox’sX-Menfranchise is more popular than ever, fresh off the success ofX-Men: First Classand last year’sX-Men: Days of Future Past, with next year’sX-Men: Apocalypseclosing out that trilogy. Unlike Sony, which desperately needed to make some sort of move to revitalize their Spider-Man franchise, 20th Century Fox’sX-Menfranchise is still successful and well-regarded among the fanboy community, and they don’t necessarily need Marvel Studios' help. On the other hand, the Sony deal has proven that anything is possible, and it’s worth noting that 20th Century Fox and Marvel already share rights to characters such as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, which will carry intoMarvel Phase Three. Perhaps another deal could be struck that would allow Wolverine to step into the MCU, but that seems highly unlikely at this point.
