Earlier this month, production got under way on Fox’sUntitled X-Files Revival, which brings backGillian Anderson(Dana Scully) andDavid Duchovny(Fox Mulder). Given the secretive nature of the show, there isn’t too much we know yet, except that the revival will premiere this January, with the two stars joined byMitch Pileggi(Walter Skinner),William B. Davis(TheCigarette Smoking Man) and new guest starJoel McHale, who will play an ally to Mulder. Today,Entertainment Weeklyhas revealed the cover of this week’s issue, which features bothGillian AndersonandDavid Duchovnyreuniting aMulder and Scully, who shared new details about the show.

The series premiere will focus on Scully and Mulder investigating a “possible alien abductee,” played byThe Americansstar Annet Mahendru, based on a tip provided by a conservative talk show host, played byJoel McHale. “Mulder’s not in a great place. He’s wearing bad jeans, so you’re able to just extrapolate from my wardrobe. He’s in a dark, dark place.”

Gillian Andersonadds that she enjoys how we first meet Mulder and Scully in their relationship.

“I like where we find Mulder and Scully in their relationship. I also like the area of zeitgeist that we step in to. It’s on point and raises some very interesting issues. And question marks.”

Series creatorChris Carteradds that the show reflects our current society, in the aftermath of 9/11, which happened right before the original show went off the air.

“TheX-Filesended right after 9/11. A lot has happened since then. A lot of rollback of rights and liberties in the name of our protection. We’re being spied on now, we’re being lied to - all things that, for me, remind me of when I grew up, which was right around Watergate. I think we’re in similar and much more dire times right now.”

This latest report also debunks a rumor from earlier this month, that the second episode,“Home Again”, is asequelto the fan-favorite episode"Home"fromThe X-Files Season 4. Instead, it is described as “a lunatic love story about deformed, inbred children and the limbless mother they keep under their bed.” While several of the original cast members are coming back,Chris Carterrevealed that none of the monsters from theThe X-Filesare returning.

“We’re not going to reboot any of the old favorites, although it was something we all thought about. These are all brand new stories. We hope to scare you in brand new ways.”
